Though John Wesley himself condemned what was then called “enthusiasm,” his Methodist followers in America did not. They enthusiastically went off to camp meetings, where rhythmic hand-clapping, repetitive singing, running the aisles, “getting blessed,” and even barking to “tree the devil” were not uncommon. The term “shouting” became a modifier for Methodist, producing a new moniker:
